Field of Dreams
A baseball field in a corn field in Dyersville, Iowa became a tourist destination after the blockbuster movie Field of Dreams was filmed there. The field, the house and the surrounding 193 acres are now for sale. The asking price is reported to be 5.4 million dollars. After 20 years and millions of visitors, even though the land has been in the family for more than 100 years, owners Don and Becky Lansing want to retire. So this magical place may or may not continue to exist. The owners are putting no restrictions on the sale so there are no guarantees the baseball field will survive. Apparently there have been several offers already. The Lansings have never charged admission and the place still looks like it did in the movie, except for two small souvenir stands. Many visitors come because of baseball; some come to connect with lost ones. Some just want to see the set of the movie, but they still come after all these years. “If you build it, they will come.”
The movie starring Kevin Costner was released in 1989 and the baseball diamond built by Universal Studios and maintained by the Lansings has been a popular tourist attraction ever since. The movie was based on the book “Shoeless Joe” by W. P. Kinsella who was a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop at the University of Iowa. It was nominated for Best Picture and Best Score at the 1989 Academy Awards.
Only time will tell if the new owner will keep the dreams alive or if the baseball field will return to its original state…an Iowa corn field.
It would be a shame to see it destroyed.

Great story. I loved that movie.
Amazing movie.. Cool nostalgic moment
There have actually been quite a few movies and shows produced in Iowa. Bridges of Madison County, Twister, to name a couple. See iowa.com/ilive/claim-to-fame/movies-made-in-iowa for more.
We actually drove past that location once while on vacation. There were not many gas filling stations along that way and we were literally operating on fumes before we came across a gas station to fill up the gas tank. I was really fearful that we might run out of gas in the middle of all of those corn fields. Of course that was many years ago and the area has undoubtedly changed quite a bit since the days of our visit.
Field of Dreams was a good movie!
Totally Cool Hub! Thanks and I so liked that movie too. Have a great day. Lanea

I do hope it remains the field of dreams but Iowa corn fields are not bad either. As long as they don't build condos.
