How to Catch Nightcrawlers

Nightcrawlers or earthworms are an excellent all-around fishing bait. Most kinds of fish will bite on a nightcrawler. They are sold by the dozen and may range in price from $2.00 to $4.00 depending on your location. Why not save some money and catch your own? Or start a little business on the side and make some extra money!
Ways of Catching Nightcrawlers
The only time you will see a nightcrawler during the day is after a heavy rain. You can pick up dozens of nightcrawlers off the streets. It doesn’t take very long to do it this way!
But it hasn’t rained in a while and you want to go fishing, another way to catch them is to overturn some garden soil. If you have good soil, you can find them this way. Or Iook for them when you have disturbed the soil while weeding. Keep a worm box in the refrigerator so you can add to it whenever you find them. A worm bedding mix found in any department store’s sporting goods section works best.
Another way is to wet down an area of grass in your lawn and go out after dark with a flashlight. They are sensitive to light so try using a red light flashlight. They will either be slithering through the grass which makes it easy to pick them up, or sometimes they will be half in and half out of the hole in the ground. Do not yank them or you will rip them apart. Gently hold onto the worm with one hand and take a finger on the other hand and stroke the worm up and down. While doing this, gently pull up. The worm will eventually come up out of the hole. Kids love to do this so get them involved. I still remember catching nightcrawlers like this when I was a kid.
Keep Them Refrigerated
Nightcrawlers will last a long time in worm bedding in the refrigerator, but you do need to go through it occasionally and pull out any dead ones. I would suggest putting them in the extra refrigerator in the garage, if you have one!
Save Money or Make Money
Catching your own nightcrawlers can be a fun family activity and saves you money on your next fishing trip. Or you can sell them to make a little extra money. So get out there and catch those nightcrawlers!
